Carlos Alcaraz Wins US Open for 6th Slam Title

Carlos Alcaraz won the U.S. Open men’s final on Sept. 7, in a match attended by President Donald Trump, with a 6–2, 3–6, 6–1, 6–4 victory.

The start of the game was delayed by around half an hour to accommodate Trump, who sat in a sponsor’s suite and whose arrival left thousands of fans in the security line waiting to enter the Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the match was held.

Alcaraz, 22, has now clinched his sixth major trophy of his career and second of the year, following the French Open. The Spaniard took home his first Grand Slam title in New York in 2022 while in his teens after he defeated Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals.

Sinner, 24, was trying to become the first repeat men’s champion at Flushing Meadows since Roger Federer took home five championships in a row between 2004 and 2008.

Speaking after the game, Alcaraz joked to Sinner, “I’m seeing you more than my family. It’s great to share the court, to share the locker rooms, everything.”

The comment elicited a grin from Sinner.

Sunday’s match was the first time in tennis history that the same two men had faced off against one another in three consecutive Grand Slam finals within a single season. Alcaraz prevailed over Sinner during the French Open in June, erasing a trio of match points, while Sinner defeated Alcaraz at Wimbledon in July.

Sunday’s match was somewhat of a tiebreaker for the two, with Alcaraz set to become No.1 in the rankings, and it being an eighth consecutive major title, or 10th of the past 13.

It was Sinner’s fifth appearance in the U.S. Open final in a row at the U.S. Open, the biggest event in tennis, which began with his title at the event a year ago. He has prevailed in 33 of 34 matches at the majors since the beginning of the tournament, with just one loss to Alcaraz at Roland-Garros.

Sinner has been 1–6 against Alcaraz and 109–4 against every other contender over the last two seasons.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz has won 36 of 37 matches since May, with his only loss coming against Sinner at the All England Club, which was also his first defeat in a Grand Slam final. He leads the 2025 tour in wins with 60 and titles with six, and has climbed to the finals at his previous eight tournaments.
